DEBBIE MARI AT SUNDAY JAZZ AT CHICO’S

(Debbie Mari)

Jazz lovers are celebrating one of Durban’s newest live music venues! Chico’s opened its doors recently with the launch of The Jazz Sessions – weekly Late Night Thursday and Sunday Jazz sessions featuring the cream of Durban’s jazz talent.

Debbie Mari, a familiar face on the Durban jazz scene, and she and her band will pay tribute to Diana Krall tomorrow (August 21).

Featuring selections from Krall’s best loved albums, Debbie will sing and play such favourites as Devil May Care, East of The Sun and So Nice. A Lecturer in the Jazz Studies programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, School of Arts (Music), Mari has enjoyed many musical collaborations performing mostly mainstream jazz standards and more recently selections of South African poetry.

Well-known for her velvety vocal tone, she performs regularly in Durban as vocalist and pianist in a range of musical settings. Besides live performance, she is equally passionate about teaching. In 2013, with her long-time music collaborator and husband George Mari, established Marigold Music School as an opportunity to share their music knowledge and industry experience with emerging musicians. Never quite missing a beat, she also has her finger on the pulse of advocacy for arts participation for all – she is Project Manager for the UKUSA Performing Arts Programme and Chairperson of the KZN United Music Industry (KUMISA) Board and has been vocal coach for X Factor South Africa Season 1, SA’s Got Talent and other local productions.

Mari (piano and vocals) will be joined by Ildo Nandja (bass), Jude Kenrick (drums) and George Mari (trumpet) for Chico’s Jazz Sessions (Sunday Lunch). You can enjoy the Jazz with a three-course set menu for lunch (R150 adults, R100 children) on August 21 from 12h00 to 15h00.
