Deadline: December 15,
2016
The African Art
Centre is calling on young artists interested in expanding their creative
skills to enrol for the Velobala Fine Art or Jewellery Design classes during
year 2017.
The Velobala
Programme is an African Art Centre Development Project that offers formal art
classes to young talented black artists who do not have the financial means to
enrol for tertiary-level art training. Initiated in 1994, this African Art
Centre programme is an ongoing commitment to facilitate exploration of
different mediums for young talented artists, including ceramics, drawing,
painting, jewellery and printmaking. This project is supported by the Durban
University of Technology’s Department of Fine Art and Jewellery Design.
During its 22 years of support, Velobala has produced a
number of well-known KwaZulu-Natal artists within the Visual Art and Jewellery
design sector, including Gabisile Nkosi, Witty Nyide, Lalelani Mbhele, Siphiwe
Zulu, Gloria Mbhele, Malibongwe Shangase, Major Ndlovu, Sthenjwa Luthuli,
Mabusi Ntuli, Mthobisi Maphumulo and Zakhele Hlabisa.
Interested applicants must bring five to ten examples of
their most recent work for evaluation to the African Art Centre Gallery at 94
Florida Road in Morningside, Durban. This should be accompanied by a photocopy
of their ID or Birth Certificate. Spaces are limited.
The deadline for applications is December 15, 2016, and successful
applicants will be notified before the end of January 2017 and the programme
officially begins in February 2017.
