(Dawn King, Lungile Mkhize & Sheila Khumalo)
Excitement is
mounting as the opening night of acclaimed director and playwright, Duma Ndlovu’s
drama, The Game, draws near.
Presented by The
Playhouse Company, and directed by Ndlovu, this celebrated play is one of his
best-known works, others including Bergville
Stories, The Ritual and The Journey.
Ndlovu is renowned for creating the enormously popular SABC shows, Uzalo and Muvhango.
The production is
set in a fictitious women’s prison on the eve of South Africa’s first
democratic elections. The prisoners are told that one of the prisoners will be
released to mark the occasion, but the prison sets the cat among the pigeons
when they tell the women they will have to decide among themselves who will be
released.
Much of the
excitement is due to the star-studded cast that has been assembled for the
production. Dawn King, much-loved for her role in SABC1’s Uzalo, plays a fierce, street-wise older woman who has spent her
entire adult life in and out of prison. Lungile Mkhize, another Uzalo actor, takes on the role of Take
5, while Sindi Dlathu and Buhle Samuels, who both star in the SABC show Muvhango, will feature as hardcore
criminals Nomsa and Pretty, respectively.
Durban actress,
singer and playwright Sheila Khumalo, Newcastle-born actress Nomasonto Dlamini,
Vuyiseka Cawe (The Gift, Rhythm City)
and Ngobile Ndlovu make up the stellar cast of this riveting play.
The Game opens in the Playhouse Loft Theatre on December 15 and runs until December
