To celebrate the start of Music Revival's 20th year presenting classical
music concerts, Christopher Duigan will performing My Favourite Magnificent Classics, a programme of his favourite
masterpieces, at St Agnes Church in Kloof on January 26 at 19h30 and at the
Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg on January 29 at 15h00.
These uplifting and boldly positive compositions have formed
a major part of the Maritzburg-based pianist’s repertoire over the past
two decades.
Music Revival, established in October1997, has grown from a series of
small intimate concerts to a regular and dependable series of more than 100
concerts annually presented across KwaZulu-Natal, in Johannesburg and the Cape
Winelands. These musical events range from home soirees to major festivals and
symphony concerts.
The My Favourite Magnificent
Classics programme includes: George Frederic Handel's Chaconne in G HWV 435 and Ludwig van Beethoven’s exhilarating ‘Waldstein’ Sonata op 53 - one of his
most iconic and revered compositions.
Duigan will also play Claude Debussy’s Reflets dans l'eau (Reflections in the water) and Liszt’s Harmonies du soir from his Transcendental Etudes, a powerful and
emotionally resplendent composition. The programme ends with the ‘Heroic’ Polonaise in A-flat Op 53 by
Frederic Chopin; one of the composer’s boldest compositions and one which gives
voice to a nation’s cry for freedom following the Russian invasion of Poland of
1831.
