Friends of Music’s first
recital for 2017 will be The Gypsy Strings and will take place on January 31.
A recital not to be
missed, it’s a colourful bouquet of Balkan classical folk tunes performed by this new KZN Ensemble. The
Music programme features arrangements from Bartok, Martinu, Vladigerov and many
others. The performers are well known KZN Philharmonic players Ralitza Macheva
(Bulgaria) Annamaria D’Andrea (Italy) and Ralitsa Pechoux (Bulgaria) all on
strings. The drums are brought together by the excellent percussionism of
Stephan Pechoux (France)
The programme includes
Bizet’s Carmen Suite, Victor Herbert’s
Gypsy Life, Pablo Sarasate’s Romanza Andaluza as well as Bella Bartok’s
Romanian Folk Dances no10. Also on the programme are Michael McLean’s Tango -
Serenata- Rumba- Csardas; Bela Keler’s Son
of the Puszta, Brahms’ Hungarian Dance no 5 and an anonymous piece titled Moldovanke
The Prelude
Performer will be Nontobeko Bhengu (soprano) who started singing at the age of
7, taking lessons with internationally-acclaimed baritone Mandla Mkhize. She
received a gold medal for singing Contessa
Perdona in the Opera Voices South Africa Competition. She is currently the
best National Soloist in the ABC Motsepe Schools Choral Eisteddfod. Her programme
will include O Care Parolette from Orlando, O Mio Babbbino Caro from Gianni
Schicchi and Summer Time from Porgy and Bess
The recital will
take place at 19h30 on January 31 at the Durban Jewish Centre, 44 K.E. Masinga
(Old Fort) Road, Durban. Tickets R100 (FOM Members R80, Orchestral &
Students R20).
