THULILE ZAMA TRIBUTE TO MAMA AFRICA

From one well-loved African vocalist honouring another. Miriam Makeba’s career influenced Thulile Zama to such an extent that she found it fitting to bring a tribute in the honour of Mama Africa. The performances will take place from April 28 to 30 at Rhumbelow Theatre in Durban and on May 14 at Rhumbelow Pietermaritzburg (Allan Wilson Shellhole).

Zama and her band have chosen songs from different era of her illustrious career including favourites like Pata Pata and Click Song, but also the ballads like Promise and the heart wrenching offerings that Makeba penned when she was in exile are included in their set.

Zama’s band consists of David Smith on keys, Rebekah Doty on drums and Sbusiso Mkhonze on bass guitar.

Thulile Zama Holds a BA (Music) from UKZN and is the lead vocalist of successful all-female contemporary jazz band, Heels Over Head (best contemporary jazz nominees SAMA – 2011). This versatile vocalist brings a wide repertoire that ranges from Jazz to Covers, to Afro effortlessly. She is well-known in the jazz circuit and a much-loved vocalist in Durban.

Her talents have taken her all around the country, as well as to Swaziland and Germany. She has loads of experience for her age, plenty of passion for music and the performing arts. She has done performances for Bona Magazine, Weekend Live (SABC 2), SAB, Top Billing (SABC 3), HIVAN, Camel, Glenfiddich and countless events companies and institutions.

Performances at Rhumbelow Theatre, 42 Cunningham Road off Bartle Road, Umbilo, Durban, take place on April 28 and 29 at 20h00 and April 30 at 14h00 and 18h30. Braais will be available for those who wish to cook some meat before the show.

Performances at the Allan Wilson Shellhole, 5 Durban Road in Pietermaritzburg take place on May 14 at 14h00 and 18h30.

Venue opens 90 minutes before show for picnic. There is a bar available at each venue (no alcohol may be brought on to the premises)
