OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUNG FEMALE CHOREOGRAPHERS

Deadline: June 2, 2017, at 14h00

The Sibikwa Arts Centre Call is calling for young female choreographers and performance artists to take part in Thunya Lerole Sibikwa Dance Season 2017.

Thunya Lerole – comprising of Mzansi’s Young Female Choreographers in Action, Negotiated Spaces and Dance Xplosion – will all be held during the months of August and September.

This year the Sibikwa Dance Season, funded by Rand Merchant Bank, starts with Mzansi’s Young Female Choreographers in Action, already dubbed a ‘highly historic encounter’ by arts professionals at its inaugural edition in 2016. This initiative empowers young, female choreographers and performance artists by giving them the opportunity to create a new work and showcase it at the revamped Sibikwa premises.

The Sibikwa Arts Centre calls out for young female choreographers and performance artists between the ages of 20 and 35 to apply to be part of this exciting platform. Previous participants may apply. This call is for those who can work independently and have a passion for using dance as a creative medium for communicating with the world.

Six young female choreographers / performance artists will be given the opportunity to create a new work of 20 minutes, participate in a five-day mentoring and rehearsal period led by dance experts from July 31 to August 4 and perform at the Sibikwa Theatre in Benoni on August 5, 2017.

The call is for choreographers / performance artists in the following categories:

-Emerging artists: recent graduates of a tertiary training programme with a focus on dance, 1 to 3 years of professional practice and having presented work on at least one public platform;

-Emerging artists: recent graduates of a tertiary training programme with a focus on dance, 1 to 3 years of professional practice and having presented work on at least one public platform;
Young artists: 3 to 5 years of professional practice and having presented work on at least 2 public platforms;

-Established artists: over five years of professional practice and having presented work regularly on national public platforms.

There is a commission fee for each category but note that – given the nature of the commission – the number of dancers should be limited to two, excluding the choreographer. Preference will be given to those choreographers and performance artists who include female dancers in their ensemble.

Registration forms can be requested from jannekes@iafrica.com

Submissions – including a short description of the new work (max 400 words), cv/history of work career, short video clip or photos of previous works and a reference letter from someone within the industry should be e-mailed to jannekes@iafrica.com before June Friday 2 2017 at 14h00.

All entries will be adjudicated by an industry panel and decisions, which are final, will be available on June 9, 2017. Only successful applicants will be contacted.
