The Sibikwa Arts Centre Call is calling for
young female choreographers and performance artists to take part in Thunya
Lerole Sibikwa Dance Season 2017.
Thunya Lerole – comprising of Mzansi’s
Young Female Choreographers in Action, Negotiated Spaces and Dance Xplosion –
will all be held during the months of August and September.
This year the Sibikwa Dance Season, funded
by Rand Merchant Bank, starts with Mzansi’s Young Female Choreographers in
Action, already dubbed a ‘highly historic encounter’ by arts professionals at
its inaugural edition in 2016. This initiative empowers young, female
choreographers and performance artists by giving them the opportunity to create
a new work and showcase it at the revamped Sibikwa premises.
The Sibikwa Arts Centre calls out for young
female choreographers and performance artists between the ages of 20 and 35 to
apply to be part of this exciting platform. Previous participants may apply.
This call is for those who can work independently and have a passion for using
dance as a creative medium for communicating with the world.
Six young female choreographers /
performance artists will be given the opportunity to create a new work of 20
minutes, participate in a five-day mentoring and rehearsal period led by dance
experts from July 31 to August 4 and perform at the Sibikwa Theatre in Benoni
on August 5, 2017.
The call is for choreographers /
performance artists in the following categories:
-Emerging
artists: recent graduates of a tertiary training programme with a focus on
dance, 1 to 3 years of professional practice and having presented work on at
least one public platform;
-Emerging
artists: recent graduates of a tertiary training programme with a focus on
dance, 1 to 3 years of professional practice and having presented work on at
least one public platform;
Young artists: 3 to 5 years of professional
practice and having presented work on at least 2 public platforms;
-Established
artists: over five years of professional practice and having presented work
regularly on national public platforms.
There is a commission fee for each category
but note that – given the nature of the commission – the number of dancers
should be limited to two, excluding the choreographer. Preference will be given
to those choreographers and performance artists who include female dancers in
their ensemble.

Submissions – including a short description
of the new work (max 400 words), cv/history of work career, short video clip or
photos of previous works and a reference letter from someone within the
industry should be e-mailed to jannekes@iafrica.com before June Friday 2 2017
at 14h00.
All entries will be adjudicated by an
industry panel and decisions, which are final, will be available on June 9, 2017.
