Baritone Federico Freschi
and pianist Christopher Duigan, will perform The Songs You Love, on July 27 at St Agnes Church in Kloof and the
Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg on July 30.
The concert will bring
together popular melodies from the world of opera, classic musicals and the
world’s popular stages. The programme includes numbers from Carmen, Marriage of Figaro, My Fair Lady,
Neapolitan songs including O sole mio,
and celebrated numbers from Cole Porter, Edith Piaf and others.
After completing
postgraduate studies in History of Art, Freschi studied towards a Performer’s
Diploma in Opera at the University of Cape Town’s College of Music. He
subsequently sang with the CAPAB Singers’ Studio, appearing in a number of
operas, operettas and musicals.
Since returning to
Johannesburg, Freschi has performed several roles, including Germont in La Traviata, Marcello in La Bohème, Dr Malatesta in Don Pasquale, Danilo in The Merry Widow, and Zurga in Les Pêcheurs de Perles, amongst others. He
is currently executive dean of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at
the University of Johannesburg and maintains a regular concert schedule in
collaboration with Duigan.
Duigan is widely regarded
as one of South Africa's most leading concert pianists and has performed
extensively with all leading orchestras in the country, including the
KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic, Cape Philharmonic and Johannesburg Philharmonic
Orchestras. In recital he has achieved a popular following through his
innovative presentation and programming featuring a broad and eclectic taste in
music.
The Songs You Love will take place on
July 27 at 19h30 at St Agnes Church in Kloof and on July 30 at 11h30 at the
Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg.
