A
selection of top Durban art -makers are creating works around the theme of
“Carnival” to be displayed as part of the ARTiculate Book and Art Fair taking
place at the ICC from September 29 to October 1, 2017.
The
visual arts component embraces the theme “Carnevale” and is being curated by
Curate.a.Space. The formal by-line of the exhibition is “Enchant, Celebrate,
Create and Disrupt”. The theme suggests art which is simultaneously colourful,
celebratory, gaudy, festive, extravagant and showy: feathers, masks, beads and
bling. It is both deeply-rooted in tradition, faith and symbolism, as well as
being transient and impermanent. It celebrates community and coming-together;
it acknowledges excess and abundance before a time of abstemiousness and
sobriety.
Durban
will be celebrating the arts in an inclusive manner and on show will be a wide
range of artists from different parts of the city and the rest of the country.
“Carnival” joins the creative line up as part of the ARTiculate Book and Art
Fair taking place at the ICC from September 29 to October 1 as part of the
city-hosted Essence Festival 2017.
