It’s no secret that Durbanites love their
stand-up comedy and now with a brand new weekly comedy club in town, there’s
more to whet that growing appetite for fresh funny!
The newly refurbished Lucky’s Bar and Cafe
- situated in 507 Windermere Road in Durban - is offering more than a few
tweaks on their menu.
In addition to an array of weekly
entertainment gigs at the establishment, owners Colin Balliram and Debora
Pillay says they’ll be serving up some of the finest in stand-up comedy via
their Thursday Comedy Club gigs.
Colin explained how the concept came about:
“Durban comedian Carvin Goldstone has been a frequent patron of Lucky's Bar and
Cafe and it made perfect sense that we should combine our efforts in a bid to
deliver a weekly dose of stress relief and emotional detachment via the best
medicine - laughter,” he said.
“Lucky's Bar and Cafe offers its clientele
entertainment for every day of the week, and we feel adding a Comedy Club to
the already busy line-up would fit right in with the culture of what we are
wanting to achieve, which is an entertainment hotspot for everyone, everyday of
the week! Lucky’s is cosy and loungy with a great ambience. Comedy would be
right at home here,” he added.
Popular comedian, Carvin Goldstone, said:
“Durban is ready for dedicated comedy spaces. At the moment all our gigs are
pop up gigs or monthlys. Thursday Comedy Club will give visiting and local acts
a regular space to test new ideas and work jokes. “We have already booked
recognised international comedians Dana Alexandera from Canada and Justin
Rivera from America’s Got Talent for
the shows in November. We've also booked local favourites Neil Green, Arnotte
Payne and East Coast Radio's Rory Petzer. So it’s going to be a huge surprise
every week to see who is taking the stage at Thursday Comedy Club.
“Windermere Road is also a great location.
The New York Bar, which hosted a comedy night which I performed at regularly
and helped grow, was down the road. It closed this year so we saw an
opportunity to do something that kept comedy alive in the area,” he added.
Thursday Comedy Club launches on October 26
2017. The line-up features Tyson Heffer headlined by Carvin H Goldstone. Andrew
Hughes will host the show.
Tyson Heffer is known for his one liner
observational style of comedy, his punchline after punchline delivery will have
audiences vacillating between wanting to laugh and wanting to hear what comes
next. He has gained experience by performing alongside some of the best acts
South Africa has to offer, and has stamped his mark on the flourishing Durban
comedy scene.
Carvin Goldstone has been doing comedy for
11 years and is fast becoming one of the country’s most sought-after
entertainers. What sets him apart is his clean, no swearing style. No matter
where Goldstone performs, his shows are guaranteed as suitable for the entire
family. Goldstone is a two-time comedy show winner with three sold-out one man
comedy shows under his belt.
His clean honest comedy has won him
audiences that range from different backgrounds and his audiences continue to
grow with every performance. In 2011 Carvin performed his first one man comedy
show titled No Swearing to sold-out
houses at the Playhouse in Durban. His 2012 one man show iBruino was staged at the Playhouse Opera, the biggest theatre
venue in KwaZulu-Natal on October 13, 2012. The show completely sold out and
this show served to announce that Carvin H Goldstone can now officially be
described as one of the hottest comedians on the South African comedy
landscape. In 2015, he staged his newest one man show, Coloured President, to sold-out audiences at The Playhouse Opera in
Durban and at good capacity at the Lyric Theatre.
2016 and 2017 have seen Carvin expand his
career internationally with successful tours to Australia and New Zealand, an
extended tour with MSC Cruise Tours and an upcoming tour in The Middle East in
November 2017.
Andrew Hughes is a proudly Durban comedian
born in Ixopo. He has been doing comedy for a year and in that time he has had
the privilege of sharing the stage with some South African comedy heavyweights,
such as Joey Rasdien, Kagiso Lediga, Dillon Oliphant, Masood Boomgaard, Jem
Atkins, Dalen Oliver, Gino Fernández and Donovan Goliath, to name a few. Hughes
is a young and ambitious comic and believes that with dedication and hard work,
you can make all of your dreams come true. He shares his hilarious experiences
through storytelling and has a charming stage presence and is also quite the
impersonator.
