A bouquet of beautiful music will be presented to local
audiences when Swing into Spring
comes to Pietermaritzburg City Hall, a city renowned for its rich floral and
gardening heritage, on October 13.
Bringing to life a magnificent selection of music that
celebrates and uplifts with tones of spring, new energy and rebirth, will be the
KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Presented by Christopher Duigan’s Music Revival, in
association with the KZN Philharmonic and sponsored by MayFord seeds, Swing into Spring is another in the long
list of highly successful productions with the renowned KZN Philharmonic at the
City Hall.
“We have chosen a selection of flowing, elegant and graceful
music that will bring the audience head-long into an exuberant celebration of
spring. We also see this as a culmination of a sequence of events that involves
the city’s floral heritage with Open Gardens and Garden Show traditionally held
at this time of year,” said Music Revival’s Christopher Duigan.
The concert includes a selection of Strauss waltzes, usually
associated with that most elegant of cities, Vienna, a city also associated
with its magnificent floral vistas.
These include Johann Strauss II’s Tales from the Vienna Woods Waltz and Voices of Spring along with the Tristch
Trasch’ Polka.
Edvard Grieg’s Wedding
Day at Troldhaugen, Morning Mood from Peer
Gynt and Norwegian Dances will
also be performed by the 60-player orchestra along with Tchaikovsky’s Waltz of the Flowers, a must for any
floral-themed concert.
The grand sweep of Tchaikovsky’s music will carry through
into the celebrated Piano Concerto No 1, which will be performed by local pianist
and Steinway artist, Duigan. The work is regarded as one of the most dazzling
piano compositions ever written, and renowned for its soaring opening melody.
The concert, which will be conducted by Naum Rousine, is the
final event in a week-long Spring Festival presented by Duigan’s Music Revival in
celebration of its 20th year.
Music Revival has presented and collaborated on numerous
soirees, concerts and events in the city and further afield since its official
founding in October 1997.
