On November 3, 2017, The Sound Café stage in
Ballito will be mesmerized by Thabani Gapara and his band: Llewellyn Chetty (bass),
Shemual Mahabeer( keyboards and piano), Alwyn John Singh (drums) and Thulile
Zama on vocals as special guest.
Zimbabwean born and raised Thabani Gapara
is an Auckland based saxophonist who has been performing in and round New
Zealand for the last six years. A recent graduate of the New Zealand School of
Music (B Mus Jazz), he has had the pleasure of playing as a member in several
musical projects in Zimbabwe, South Africa and now New Zealand. His passion for
collaboration has seen him work with a plethora of NZ artists including:
Batucada Sound Machine, Hipstamatics, Vince Harder, Stan Walker, House of Shem,
Three Houses Down and Katchafire, to mention but a few. In South Africa, Gapara
has worked with Ernie Smith, Natalie Rungan, RJ Benjamin, Neil Gonsalves and
many others.
In the “The Gapara Project” Thabani steps
out as band leader presenting his own original music and a mix of some
arrangements of music from a variety of his influences.
“I will perform a mix Afro jazz, soul and
funk classics as well as original music paying homage to the music of artists
who have influenced me in writing and my performance style which includes Hugh
Masekela, Fela Kuti, Sipho Gumede Gerald Albright, Maceo Parker and Kenny
Garret. I will feature the soulful vocals of Durban's own Thulile Zama. It will
be a music event full of fun and good music.” says Gapara
