COUNTRY NIGHT

Country Night, which has enjoyed very good support from the local community, family and friends, will be enjoyed by all country music fans. (Review by Keith Millar)

At a time when theatre in Durban is going through tough times and there seems to be plethora of music revues and tribute shows, all vying for dwindling audiences, one must admire amateur production houses who plough on regardless, creating a platform for their regulars to realise their creativity and offering development opportunities for new promising talent.

One such production house is Spot Light Productions who are currently staging County Night, a tribute to country and folk music, at the New Germany Sports Club.

The show which features plenty of good music and a minimum of chat is an eclectic mix of everything from the classics from Johnny Cash, John Denver and Dolly Parton to more modern hits from the likes of Kid Rock and Claire Bowen.

Performers of note are two newcomers to the Spot Light Productions stage, Ren Veldman and Nadine Wilmot. Both acquitted themselves well and show promise of more to come in the future. Other newcomers in the cast of 10 were Dani Cook, Lee Vee and Marius Botha while Spot Light regulars Caeley van Doorn, Ross Lottering, Sharon Ditchburn, Sharon Watters and Laura Lee-Hillier all did their part in this hand clapping foot stomping show.

The production is directed by Sharon Watters, with Kevin Lee-Hillier his usual competent self with the sound rig. Gabrielle Stow looked after the lighting.

Among the 27 songs performed in the show, were I Will Wait (Mumford and Son), Rocky Mountain High (John Denver), These Boots Were Made For Walking (Nancy Sinatra), Grandma’s Feather Bed (John Denver), Achy Breaky Heart (Billy Rae Cyrus), 7 Bridges Road (The Eagles), Jolene (Dolly Parton), Black Roses (Claire Bowen), All Summer Long (Kid Rock) and Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash).

The show is presented as a supper theatre production. You may bring your own or order from the club’s kitchen. However, I would suggest that ‘bring your own’ is the way to go, as the service from the kitchen is painfully slow. Try an hour and 45 minutes for a hamburger. I must point out that this is not the fault of the producers of the show but rather incompetence on the side of the club.

Country Night, which has enjoyed very good support from the local community, family and friends, will be enjoyed by all country music fans. But get your bookings in quickly as tickets are selling fast.

The show has two performances left, on November 24 and 25 at the New Germany Sports Club Harvey Road.
Doors will open at 19h00 and the show starts at 20h00 sharp. Tickets R100 pp.  Call Sharon on 082 997 0709 to book your tickets! – Keith Millar
