present A Christmas Opera Evening on
December 14.

South Africa’s leading Three Tenors - I Grandi Tenori - performing a repertoire
that will include – opera arias, light classical as well as popular Christmas carols.
I Grandi Tenori’s mission is to use its own resources to
fight unemployment, exploitation and non-recognition of opera graduates. It is
for this reason that all door-takings collected on this day will go towards Let Me Sing schools project- an
initiative that seeks to support music syllabus in schools across the province
of KwaZulu-Natal.
Friends of Music, the largest music classical society KZN, fully
supports I Grandi Tenori in their endeavours and are proud to be their partners
with this Christmas Opera evening.
The programme will include Nessun Dorma; Core ngrato; The Lord’s Prayer; Ave Maria; E Luce van
lestelle; Una furtiva lagrima; My way; Masibuyelane and La Donna e Mobile. Christmas
music will include Holy City; O Holy
Night; Silent Night; Away in a Manger; Hark the Herald Angels and Joy to the World.
The Friends of Music organization was formed by highly
respected Durban music personality, Dr Vera Dubin, in 1983 when the city
disbanded its orchestra and music lovers were left without any access to
classical music.
The main purpose of the organisation is the staging of
recitals featuring top local, national and international solo artists and
chamber music groups. Thereby offering the opportunity of all Durban’s citizens
to enjoy and experience the skills of the very best in musical performances in
an environment more intimate than a huge concert hall.
These recitals also afford musicians from all backgrounds
the opportunity to showcase their creativity, skill and talent.
The organization has gone from strength to strength and is
now involved in several other important initiatives. The most important of
these is the Prelude Performer programme. Young and up-and-coming artists, many
from disadvantaged backgrounds, are featured as a curtain-raiser at the start
of every recital. The exposure these young people get in performing on a
professional stage before a knowledgeable audience is invaluable in their
musical development.
The Young Performers also receive a generous fee which is
intended to assist them with their studies. Friends of Music has a close
working relationship with the South African Society of Music Teachers (SASMT).
Once a year they present a special recital entitled Rising Stars which features the cream of the students who study
under the members of SASMT.
Annually, Friends of Music sponsor a charity concert on
behalf of the Beth Shalom home for the aged. Many of Durban’s top musicians,
including the renowned KZN Philharmonic (KZNPO), perform for free or with a
substantially reduced fee for this very successful initiative.
Friends of Music has a close working relationship with the
KZNPO and co-ordinates pre-concert lectures prior to all their concerts.
Experts in the field give insight into the music to be played that evening
thereby enhancing the concert experience for all.
Bring family and friends to the i Grandi Tenori concert and
celebrate the season in style. The concert takes place on December 14 at 19h00
at the Durban Jewish Centre, 44 KE Masinga (Old Fort Road). Tickets R50 (at the
