2018 VELOBALA CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Deadline: January 29, 2018

The African Art Centre is calling on young artists interested in expanding their creative skills to enrol for the Velobala Fine Art or Jewellery Design classes during year 2018.

The Velobala Programme is an African Art Centre Development Project that offers formal art classes to young talented black artists who do not have the financial means to enrol for tertiary-level art training.

Initiated in 1994, this African Art Centre programme is an ongoing commitment to facilitate exploration of different mediums for young talented artists, including ceramics, drawing, painting, jewellery and printmaking. This project is supported by the Durban University of Technology’s Department of Fine Art and Jewellery Design.

During its 23 years of support, Velobala has produced a number of well-known KwaZulu-Natal artists within the Visual Art and Jewellery design sector, including  Wonder Mbambo, Gabisile Nkosi, Witty Nyide, Lalelani Mbhele, Siphiwe Zulu, Gloria Mbhele, Malibongwe Shangase, Major Ndlovu, Sthenjwa Luthuli, Mabusi Ntuli, Mthobisi Maphumulo and Zakhele Hlabisa.

Interested applicants must bring five to ten examples of their most recent work for evaluation at the African Art Centre Gallery located on 15a Station Drive, Berea, Durban. This should be accompanied by a photocopy of their ID or Birth Certificate. Spaces are limited.

The deadline for applications is January 29, 2018, successful applicants will be notified early February 2018 and the programme officially begins mid-February 2018.
