(Albino
Mbie)
The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music will
host Mozambican-born USA-based guitarist Albino Mbie on February 21.
iSupport Music Business presents a tour of
guitarist/vocalist Albino Mbie who will tour in Johannesburg and KwaZulu-Natal
from February 20 to 24.
Berklee College of Music graduate, Albino
Mbie, is a Mozambican multi award-winning guitarist, vocalist and music
producer who built his first guitar from a five litre can of oil, scrap wood,
and electric cords at the tender age of 16. Drawn to the street music of
Maputo, Mbie soon started playing with bands in the local scene. For his first
time on a South African tour, Mbie brings a band of fellow Berklee graduates to
present his music to South African audiences as well as well-loved Cape Town
based drummer Frank Paco.
Mbie makes music that aims to combine
disparate entities into an organic whole while retaining their unique,
undiluted flavours. The music of his native Mozambique coupled with his
experiences living in the US, and traveling many other places in the world,
overlap pleasingly to treat the audience’s ear to an original sound of Afro-pop
meets Moz-Jazz. Imbued with a worldly energy, Mbie’s highly approachable music
exudes sophistication and simplicity.
Albino Mbie (guitar and vocal) will be
joined by his band Jiri Nedoma (piano), Guy Bernfeld (bass), and Frank Paco
(drums).
They will appear on February 21, 2018, at
18h00 (doors open at 17h30) at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM), Level
2, Shepstone Building at UKZN Howard College Campus.
