Baroque 2000 launches its 2018 Season at
the Church of the Mariannhill Monastery on Sunday (March 11). The programme
features two major works scored for strings, woodwinds and brass - JS Bach’s
Brandenburg Concerto No 1, and Handel’s Water Music (Suites 1, 2 and 3).
Complementing these two famous pieces is J.J. Fux’s Turcaria Sinfonia a 3 in C
major.

Revival present classical guitarists James Grace and Morgan Szymanski in a
recital titled Together Again.
Performing a virtuoso programme of mostly Spanish music by Ferdinando Carulli,
Manuel de Falla, Celso Machado and more, the duo appears at the Durban Jewish
Centre on Tuesday (March 21) at 19h30, and at the Tatham Art Gallery in
Pietermaritzburg at 11h30 on Wednesday March 21 ‘Human Rights Day'.
Music Revival honours this month’s
centenary of the French composer Claude Debussy who died in Paris on March 25,
1918. Widely held to have changed the face of classical music, the French
composer was hailed in a recent edition of in the British newspaper, The
Spectator, as ‘The musical genius who erupted out of nowhere’, continuing
‘Indeed, there is a good case for calling Debussy the most perfectly original
composer of the past 200 years.’
Performing a programme titled The Magical Musical World of Claude Debussy,
pianist Christopher Duigan offers an exploration of some of his best known
pieces. The programme will include iconic items such as Clair de lune, Reflections on the water, The Girl with the Flaxen Hair,
Arabesque No 1, Reverie and The
Sunken Cathedral.
Says Duigan: ‘Debussy's music is
atmospheric and subtly hued, reflecting the world around him. From images of
water and snow, recollections of Spanish and popular music, to sounds from the
Far East and ancient times; a magical world unfolds.’
Duigan’s homage to Debussy can be heard on
Monday March 19 at 19h00, at Grace Hall Ashton International College, Albertina
Way, Ballito (opp. Ballito Hospital). Booking is preferred:

unreserved. The programme will be reprised in Pietermaritzburg on March 24 and

Finally, note the fourth (and final)
concert of the KZNPO’s Summer Season takes place in The Playhouse Opera on
Thursday (March 15) at 19h30. Arjan Tien conduct Mozart’s Don Giovanni
Overture, Brahms’s A minor Double Concerto - played by son-and-father duo, Max
Baillie (violin) and Alexander Baillie (cello) – and Sibelius’s Second
