DUT Journalism and the Gandhi Development
Trust (GDT) will present the annual Mahatma Gandhi Media Lecture (MGML) on April
11. The guest speaker is Sello Hatang, Chief Executive Officer at the Nelson
Mandela Foundation.
This year’s event is of special
significance for a variety of reasons. It’s not only the 10th anniversary of
the lecture but will also serve as a tribute to the late Winnie Madikizela
Mandela. A video in memory of the “Mother of the Nation’ courtesy of Anant
Singh’s Videovision will be screened.
Moreover, 2018 marks the 125th anniversary
of the arrival of Mahatma Gandhi in South Africa as well as what would have
been the 100th birthday of the ‘icon of icons’ Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.
The MGML was launched a decade back by the
then Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Broadcasting, Jay Naidoo.
Speakers through the years included Delhi-based author Adv Anil Nauriya, Africa
Program Co-ordinator at the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) Angela
Quintal, Dr Yacoob Abba Omar former Director of Operations at the Mapungubwe
Institute (MISTRA), Executive Director at the Africa Centre for the
Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) Adv Vasu Gounden, and Mondli
Makhanya Editor-in-Chief at the City Press.
The Mahatma Gandhi Media Lecture (MGML) takes
place on April 11 at 16h30 in the Arthur Smith Hall at City Campus of the
Durban University of Technology (DUT). It's open to the public and entrance is free.
