In this semester's free Lunch Hour Concert at
the UKZN Centre for Jazz and Popular Music, the AMD programme celebrates the
legacy of heroes, Nelson Mandela, Winnie Madikizela Mandela and Albertina
Sisulu for their contributions for liberation and unity of society in South
Africa.
The concert features AMD1, 2 & 3
performing a variety of songs and dances drawn from southern Mozambique’s
musical traditional.
The theme Amaqhawe esizwe is a Zulu statement literally meaning “Our Heroes”
which locates this performance in the context of this year’s countrywide
celebrations of the centenary of uTata Mandela, uMama Albertina and the life of
uMama Winnie by enhancing these three icons’ contributions for the emancipation
of women and liberation of South Africa .
The concert will showcase a diversified
selection of repertoire drawn from xigubo, wedding and spiritual songs, and
vibrant percussion rhythms reflecting the creative work by the African Music
and Dance Ensembles during the semester. The concert will be held on May 16,
2018 at the UKZN Centre for Jazz, Shepstone Building level 2, starting at
12h10. Entrance is free.
