Playhouse stages vibrant dance piece, Ukuzinza
It is said that when you are born in
Africa, Africa is born in you. A continent of great promises, it is the place
where we can be ourselves and the place where we can remake ourselves in the
image of our dreams, Africa. It is a land full of rich culture, traditions,
beliefs and hopes. Africa is our home.
This is the premise that underpins Ukuzinza, a vibrant Playhouse Company
dance production created for the Playhouse Dance Residency. The brainchild of
noted South African choreographer, Mzokuthula Gasa, Ukuzinza - meaning ‘rooted’ or ‘grounded’ in English - features a
company of 10 dancers. The production marks something of a homecoming for
Durban-born Gasa, who now lives in Cape Town, following a five-year stint
working in England.
He is excited to be working with the
Playhouse dancers on the new show, which has a running time of one hour. It
will feature music composed by Elvis Sibeko among others, with lighting
designed by Bamanye Yeko.
Ukuzinza runs in the Playhouse Drama Theatre from May 23 to 27, as part of
