The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music will
present the UKZN Jazz Piano Showcase on May 23, 2018.
In the wake of a hugely successful Piano Passions concert that featured
prominent UKZN jazz piano alumni and their teacher, Prof Darius Brubeck, jazz
lovers are invited to a concert featuring young jazz piano students who are
successors to this illustrious legacy. It is an opportunity to hear phenomenal
talent, youthful energy and imagination that is fuelled by everything
contemporary in a stage of relative infancy.
The UKZN jazz piano faculty is particularly
excited by the current crop of students and is experiencing what feels like an
avalanche of talent. The concert will feature a selection of students from 1st,
2nd and 3rd year and the programme will comprise original compositions, jazz
standards and arrangements and mashups of various kinds. The piano students are
too numerous to feature in one concert, so a second concert has been arranged
for the Jazzy Rainbow on June 7.
Centre for Jazz is also proud to launch its
partnership with local music instrument retail chain, Musician’s Gearzone, who
have kindly sponsored product awards to participating pianists. The sponsorship
will extend to the rest of the student showcase concerts scheduled during the
course of the year.
This concert will be a part of series of
instrumental showcases that will run over the course of the year to fundraise
for the Ronnie Madonsela Scholarship. It will be followed by the bass showcase
on May 30, 2018.
The UKZN Jazz Piano Showcase will take
place on May 23 at 18h00 (doors open at 17h30) at The Centre for Jazz and
Popular music (CJPM), Level 2, Shepstone Building at UKZN Howard College Campus..General
admission R80 (R50 pensioners, R25 students).
