ZUGZWANG NATIONAL TOUR

(Hezron Chetty & The ZugZwang)

In association with Concerts SA, soundscapes music trio Hezron Chetty and The ZugZwang embark on a national tour around South Africa for a five-province, 13-date tour.

In a world where superficial and real are often crossed, a deep burden to create something new was conceptualised by Hezron Chetty and The ZugZwang.

The band will perform in Durban and Rosetta and will do a free performance in the heart of Zululand on Africa Day (May 25) in Eshowe, formerly the headquarters of King Cetshwayo.

The tour will be raising awareness for an upcoming album and displaying The ZugZwang’s rousing new sound showcasing Hezron Chetty on violin, C J Duckitt on drums, and Jeanre’ Leo on bass. Join them and experience the violin being performed like you’ve never seen or heard before.

Their choice of instrumentation is not commonly associated with a trio. The band is led by violin, driven by drums and bass and backed by the keyboard to add a rich undertone commonly associated with genres like psychedelic, rock, ethnic folk and classical.

In late 2015, violinist Hezron launched the project under his name and was later joined by CJ and Jeanré. The band toured South Africa, performing extensively and supporting artists like Dan Patlansky, Albert Frost, Arno Carstens, Lira and many more.

They have performed at every major festival in South Africa and received critical acclaim for their album The Fallacy of Composition. In Early 2017, they were invited to join the line-up for Africa Day eKapa 3rd Edition in Cape Town, where they opened for Jaco Pastorius’ and Joe Zawinul's former drummer, Paco Sery.

Hezron Chetty and The ZugZwang is the re-birth of the project under a different name. ‘Zugzwang’ means a compulsion to move and the band’s music moves its audience by aligning emotion, heart and soul. The band is constantly performing and working on new material. They are currently in studio working on their next album, which is set for release in 2018.

Hezron Chetty says: “We are innovators, our principles and integrity shape our art and heart.”

Hezron Chetty and The ZugZwang National Tour 2018 is supported by Concerts SA through the Music Mobility Fund, a funding mechanism which offers opportunities for South African musicians to undertake live music tours.
