A
Nation Reborn - subtitled Britain’s role in Israel’s restoration by Charles Gardner has
recently been published by Christian Publications International (CPI) to
coincide with the Jewish state’s celebration of its 70th birthday.
Charles Gardner is a Cape Town-born
journalist who spent the early years of his career as a Fleet Street-based
correspondent for the South African Press Association, having been ‘called’ to
write through the preaching of Rev John Stott. He has since worked mainly for
the secular press in Yorkshire while at the same time launching several
Christian publications.
Celebrating the miracle of modern Israel on
the 70th anniversary of her rebirth, the author focuses specifically on
Britain’s role in the Jewish people’s remarkable restoration – both from a
positive and negative point of view. He squarely addresses what has become a
political ‘hot potato’ without flinching from controversy, arguing strongly for
Israel’s legitimacy in the face of rising anti-Semitism.
Easy to read and understand, the narrative
flows seamlessly through 28 inspirational chapters from background to the
Balfour Declaration to powerful testimonies of Jews and Arabs who have found
both reconciliation and peace through the Jewish Messiah, Jesus Christ.
With a 44-year career in journalism behind
him, Charles writes passionately and fluently as he tackles, from a political
and biblical perspective, a subject hardly ever out of the news. As Israel
takes centre stage in world affairs, this is a must-read for all who want to
understand what the restoration means in the light of God’s eternal Word.
Describing the book as “magnificent”,
fellow journalist Christopher Proudlove comments: “It is a most important work
which deserves to be widely read and is top of my list for anyone wanting to
know about Israel.”
Clifford Denton, in his foreword, writes:
“I wholeheartedly endorse this book...and hope it would find itself in the
hands of people of influence in our nation to steer them towards thinking
again...”
