PLAYHOUSE COMPANY SUPPORTS DURBAN SHOWS AT NAF

The Playhouse, an Agency of the Department of Arts and Culture, is supporting nine stage shows from in and around Durban which will travel to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in June and July, 2018. Each will receive a preview performance at The Playhouse this weekend with free admission to the public. The shows are:

Meeting With Myself, a thought-provoking production presented by Magenta Pro (Pty) Ltd in which two women share their stories as they try to move on from the past, Written and directed by Nkosingiphile Dlamini and featuring Lerato Ntuli, Usisikelele Ngalo, and Sanele Mbhele.
Performance in the Playhouse Loft on June 21 at 11h30.
NAF performances at the NG Kerk Hall on June 28 at 16h30, June 29 at 12h30, June 30 at 12h00, July 2 at 16h30, July 3 at 18:30, and July 4 at 20h00.


Empty Stage, an unusual absurdist play, presented by Behind the 4th Wall Film and Productions, in which a woman who was once an actor interrupts a production, with intriguing consequences: Written by Edmond Mhlongo and directed by Nothando Mchunu and featuring Ntombifuthi Mfeka and Ayanda Khanyile.
Performance in the Playhouse Loft on June 21 at 14h00.
NAF performances in the Gymnasium: July 1 at 17h30; July 2 at 15h00 and 21h00; and July 3 at 18h00.


Wilting Lilies, a KwaMashu Community Advancement Drama Project which deconstructs masculinity and the expectations of society by following the journey of two brothers discovering their humanity: Written and directed by SMS Ngcobo and featuring Mfundo Msomi and Sizwe Hlophe.
Performance in the Playhouse Loft on 21 June at 15h30.
NAF performances in the Library Hall: July 4 at 10h00, July 5 at 20h00, July 6 at 10h00, July 7 at 20h00, and July 8 at 14h00.


Thuma Mina, an inspiring fusion of physical theatre, dance, poetry, and film presented by True Life that offers a fresh and optimistic take on South Africa’s socio-political climate:
Performance in the Playhouse Loft on June 22 at 11h30.
NAF performances in the Gymnasium: July 5 at 10h00, July 6 at 12h00 and 16h00, July 7 at 21h00, and July 8 at 10h30.


Peace Magents, a courageous and hard-hitting play by Ubuhle Bomlazi that highlights the message to township youth that crime does not pay:
Performance in the Playhouse Loft on June 22 at 14h00.
NAF performances in B2 Arena: July 3 at 10h00, July 4 at 12h00, July 5 at 18h30, July 7 at 14h00, and July 8 at 10h00.


Truelies, an award-winning production presented by Young Outreach Artist focusing on a young man’s challenges when sent to a psychiatric facility for examination: Written and directed by Nkululeko Mkhize with Sbusiso Mthimkhulu and Tokelo Tsalong.
Performance in the Playhouse Loft on June 22 at 15h30.
NAF performances in the Library Hall: July 3 at 18h00, July 4 at 12h00, July 5 at 12h00, July 6 at 16h00, July 7 at 10h00, and July 8 at 16h00.


Vuka Moses, a physical theatre piece presented by uMphithi Youth Development that recounts the reminiscences of an Umkhonto weSizwe soldier in exile during the struggle:

NAF performances in the Rehearsal Room: July 6 at 11h00, July 7 at 14h00 and 20h00


Sullied by Kristi–Leigh Gresse in which dance and spoken word are fused with powerful effect in a gripping examination of human behaviour and identity:
Performance in the Playhouse Loft on June 23 at 14h00;
NAF performances at PJ’s: June 28 at 20h00, June 29 at 16h00, June 30 at 14h00, July 01 at 20h00, and July 02 at 18h00.


Down to the Marrow, a Flatfoot Dance Company production in which the echoes of ancestral Zulu traditions and the need for contemporary urban blacks to find a sense of self are brought to life.

NAF performances in the Centenary Hall: July 1 at 10h00; July 2 at 14h30; July 3 at 18h00, and July 4 at 14h00.
