Grace. Pic by Val Adamson)
Acclaimed guitarist and three-time SAMA
nominee James Grace plays Journey to
Spain, an all-Spanish programme featuring music from Grace's forthcoming
album Andaluza - Music of Spain III,
at the new Highgate Wine Estate Cellar in the KZN Midlands on August 4 at
18h30.
Continuing his exploration of original and
transcribed Spanish music for the guitar, James will perform Joaquin Turina's
evocative Fandanguillo, one of the
first works originally commissioned by and composed for Andres Segovia. Also
included in the programme are a selection of works by Eduardo Sainz de la Maza,
brother of Regino Sainz de la Maza who was the dedicatee of Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez. Rodrigo also
features in the programme, with the virtuosic and hauntingly beautiful Invocacion y Danza, a homage to Manuel
de Falla.
For this concert and in the recording
studio, Grace plays on a locally-built classical guitar by leading South
African luthier Hans van den Berg. He will also perform works from his previous
two Spanish albums, Granada and Sevilla - Music of Spain II, showcasing
works by composers including Albeniz, Granados and Tarrega, among others. A
selection of James Grace's solo albums will be on sale after the concert,
including his 2017 SAMA-nominated release; Chilled.
