The launch of SA Dance Veterans Trust took
place in the Havenside Community Hall, 35 Topham Road, Chatsworth, 4092 on
August 4, 2018.
Guests from KZN Sport Veterans Association,
Office of the Premier Senior Citizens Office, Ethekwini Municipality, KZN Department
of Sport & Recreation were in attendance. Among the guests were well-wishers
from Office on rights of Senior Citizens - KZN Premiers Office, Daphney Memela,
Alfa Mchunu representing Football and Boxing represented by GV Sangweni.
Sam Lushaba, a stalwart dance teacher and
judge was acknowledged in the same event;
‘This is a long overdue recognition for his
unwavering contribution to the development and transformation of Dance both as
Sport and Art form.’ said Trust Coordinator, Dumisani Mhlongo.
The Trust started as Ballroom Recreation
and Wellness Initiative (BRWI), launched in 2011 at Durban City Hall with the
support of eThekwini Municipality and the KZN Department of Sport &
Recreation.
In 2012, the Initiative’s activities were
hosted and supported by Msunduzi and Abaqulusi Municipalities. While ballroom
dancing is an anchor activity, the Trust incorporates all other dance forms as
Social and Recreation medium and targets seniors citizens.
The Trust’s main objective is to encourage
an active ageing life style amongst the senior citizens and to give meaning to
Sport & Recreation South Africa (SRSA) strategic goals to increase
citizens' access to sport and recreation activities.
