(Rouchelle Hubsch &
Darren Peens)
This is one not to miss. (Review
by Keith Millar)
The Indie-folk duo, Digby & The
Lullaby, who performed in intimate The Art Block venue at The 2018 Hilton Arts
Festival this year, are made up of married couple, Rouchelle Hubsch (vocals and
keyboard) and Darren Peens (guitar and vocals).
They are quite unique in that they offer something completely different
from the norm.
For a start, Hubsch, who does the lion’s share of the singing, has one of
the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. Add to that their ethereal, uncomplicated
and intimate style of presentation along with their introspective and honest
melodies and lyrics and they have a vibe going that is hard to define.
The two complement each other perfectly. They display amazing synergy and
gaze lovingly at each other as they perform creating a passionate, intimate and
personal space which leaves the audience feeling spell-bound and quite breathless.
The love and respect is quite palpable.
The majority of their show comprises of their own music which is soft, gentle,
contemplative and meaningful. They also performed covers of songs from artists such
as Crowded House and Diana Krall and as the finale to their show an achingly-gentle
version of Leonard Cohen’s brilliant
Hallelujah.
Digby and the
Lullaby are heading for Durban directly after their appearance at The Hilton
Arts Festival for two performances at the Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo tomorrow
and Thursday (September 18 and 19, 2018).
Not only lovers of Indie-Folk music will be swept up by the warmth and
romance of this duo’s performance. This is one not to miss. - Keith Millar
