The Playhouse Company, an agency of the
Department of Arts and Culture, is holding auditions for Sizwe’s Triumph Over Sumdanger, written and directed by Thabo
Mnguni, which will form part of the Company’s Schools Season from February 4 to
March 1, 2019.
Cast are being sought for a moving and
controversial theatre production about a group of school learners and a
teacher. With the scourge of bullying in schools affecting many learners, Sizwe’s Triumph Over Sumdanger will draw attention to the issue, and to its
side effects of substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, and more bullying.
Actresses and actors are invited to
audition to play the following characters:
Sizwe, a 16 year-old schoolboy who is fragile and submissive, and who is
bullied.
Sumdanger. A 17 year-old bully who victimizes other learners.
Zandile, a beautiful 16 year-old girl who is dominant, talkative and optimistic.
Nonhlanhla, a smart and naive young girl of 15 years of age, who is
charismatic and brave.
A 35
year-old teacher who is passionate about his career
and about the youngsters he teaches.
Auditionees need to prepare two three-minute
monologues for their auditions. These should be similar to the characters for
which they auditioning; with the other monologue contrasting with the
character for which they are auditioning.
Each auditionee is required to send his or
her CV to testdrive@playhousecompany.com to book an audition. This must be done
before October 19 2018.
Auditions will take place on Tuesday October
30, 2018. Auditionees are reminded to bring along a head and shoulders
photograph.
