UKZN JAZZ ENSEMBLES


The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music will present the talented UKZN ensembles tonight (Wednesday October 17, 2018) and Wednesday October 24, 2018, at 18h00.

Students from different ensembles taught by Burton Naidoo, Sibusiso Mashiloane and Salim Washington will participate in this two week prelude to the Annual Jazz Jol happening on October 27 2018. Celebrating its 30th year, the Jazz Jol features composer/pianist Burton Naidoo, composer/pianist Sibusiso “Mash” Mashiloane and the much-loved UKZN Big Band.

The participants include Burton's group one class comprising of  Lindokuhle Moloi, Obakeng Thamage (piano), Nosihe Zulu and Nolwazi Dlamini on (vocals), Dimitri Barry (guitar), and Blessing Twala (bass).

Burton’s ensemble includes Zinhle Msane on vocals and saxophones, Snethemba Cele, Coutney Pendy, Samekelo Chamane, Nhlakanipho Phakathi, Mondli Gcaba Kabelo Mokhatla, (drums) Nkululeku Gwala, and Khumbelihle Kheswa (piano).

S’bu’s Ensemble are Victor, Ayanda Mfiki, Sphesihle, Nkanyiso ,Mdumiseni (piano), Andiswa Maduna, Wandi Makandula, Nomthandazo Madiya, Lwazi Khuzwayo on (vocals) Jesse Smith, (guitar) Nkululeko Freeman Gumede (bass) Caleb Frow, and Lesedi Thloele (drums).

S’bu’s Foundation group are Philangeswi Nyawusa, Nomfundo Sibiya, Zama Mlambo, Kwanele Mlambo, Jessica Martins, Thabani Nsele, Bruce Ruthnum, (guitar) Jon –Claude Sterling (bass), and Ryan de Beer (drums).

Salim’s Ensemble are Nomfundo Cleo Cele, Josie Matabola, Thulani Dlomo, Busi Hlokoza (vocals) Thobani Lushaba, Owen Balaram, Khulekani Sibeko (piano), Sanele Ntombela (guitar), Giyani Shangase (bass), Skhulile Sibisi and Lesedi Thloele (drums).

Expect to hear: Spain (Chic Corea), Ahe (Molelekwa), It’s just Talk (Pat Metheny), Through the years (Bheki Mseleku), Break Through (Hank Mobley), Daahoud (Clifford Brown), Autumn in New York, Night & Day (Cole Porter) Up Jumped Spring, Evidence (Monk) and many more.

The concerts take place at The Centre for Jazz and Popular music (CJPM), Level 2, Shepstone Building at UKZN Howard College Campus on October 17 and 24, 2018, at 1800. Doors open at 17h30. R80 for general admission (R50 pensioners, R25 students). Reminder: a longer concert than usual.
