(Pedro
Espi-Sanchis)
Teachers at Umlazi District have gathered
in numbers to explore the art of playing the Xylophone as a rare percussion
Instrument, made popular in South Africa by Pedro ‘the Music Man’. Of Spanish
origin, Pedro Espi-Sanchis is a name that is respected internationally.
A five day workshop is presently being conducted
at Briardale Primary school in Newlands West to accommodate music enthusiasts
from as far as Sawpits Primary at Umbumbulu Central, Mason Lincoln at Umlazi
Township, Ningizimu Special School at Montclair, Escombe Primary at Queensburgh
and schools of Durban West and Sydenham Circuits respectively.
Creative Arts Teachers at these schools
have been especially selected to participate. The Department of Education - Curriculum
Section - Umlazi District - TLS GET has supported the endeavours of Mr Shakeel Isseri
(Subject Advisor Creative Arts and Life Skills) in establishing a communication
link through Music, so as to connect District schools, community organizations
and NGOs in a collaborative Xylophone interaction.
The Workshop is supported by Assitej South
Africa – promoting Youth Development and Theatre represented by Provincial Co-ordinator
Ms Pauline Dalais. The Workshops culminated in a Musical Performance held on October
19 at the Briardale Primary School Hall commencing. After the show each teacher
received a xylophone to use in their schools.
The Department of Education appreciates the
Music Man’s endeavours to promote the teaching and playing of a Musical
Instrument while ensuring its sustenance across sixteen Circuits within the
District.
