(Brenda Blethyn)

The popular series Vera returns on ITV Choice (DStv 123) on January 16, 2019, at 20h00.

Multi-award-winning Brenda Blethyn returns as the unorthodox but brilliant DCI Vera Stanhope, investigating more chilling crimes only she can solve. Vera doesn’t make friends easily – she’s grumpy and short-tempered - but what she lacks in charm she makes up for in wisdom and insight.

Based on the works of bestselling author Ann Cleeves and set amid the wild beauty of the Northumberland countryside, Vera has enthralled audiences in Africa and beyond and the ninth series will be shown in Africa within a week of the UK broadcast.

In the first episode, Vera investigates the death of newly qualified forensic psychologist Joanne Caswell who was working in Newcastle when her body was found dumped on a landfill site a good distance from home. Vera soon discovers that Joanne had been looking into the crimes of a one-time patient who had recently taken their own life. Can she follow the trail to uncover a suspect with a motive to kill the victim?
