Deadline:
March 22, 2019
67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day will be
celebrating their sixth year of knitting the country together in warm displays
around South Africa.
Beautiful blankets will be laid out at
designated points across the country from 09h00 to 13h00 on March 31, 2019.
This record-breaking 67 Blankets movement
will once again be delivering blankets to those in need, keeping them warm
throughout the long cold winter months.
In Johannesburg, beautiful blankets will be
displayed at Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton, at both the Nelson Mandela Statue
and the newly unveiled 1m-tall replica of the Nelson Mandela Statue - located
close to the original. The replica was modelled by the original artist and
sculptor Kobus Hattingh and has been designed specifically to allow the
visually impaired to experience Madiba’s statue in their own way - by touching
the little statue whilst reading the braille explanation plaque. The Society
for the Blind will be joining in this Magical Moments 4 Mandela celebration.
Other 67 Blankets gatherings around South
Africa on the March 31, will be in Cape Town, the Western Cape (Pringle Bay),
Port Elizabeth, Pretoria, Bloemfontein and Durban. KnitWits and anyone donating
blankets to this incredible initiative are requested to hand in their blankets
by the March 22, 2019 (to the various drop off points – see website for
details) or they can be brought along to the 31st March event.
Whilst crocheting and knitting in Mandela
Square all will be entertained by a line-up of talented locals. At 10h00
precisely, at Mandela Square and in each of the Magical Moments 4 Mandela
get-togethers around the country, everyone, everywhere, will sing the National
Anthem. This will be live streamed from each Magical Memories 4 Mandela node,
on social media at the same time – how amazing is this!
67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day invites
