The Playhouse Company’s annual New Stages Festival traditionally affords theatre goers in Durban and surrounds the prime opportunity of seeing a fresh crop of cutting edge stage-works that are making waves on the national performing arts circuit.

One of the remarkable productions to be seen on this year’s New Stages roster in May is the multiple award-winning one-hander, Tswalo.

The product of hot-property creative team Billy Langa (writer, performer), Mahlatsi Mokgonyana (director, lighting designer) and John Withers (composer, sound designer), Tswalo is described by its creators as “a body of poems constructed to fragment a narrative that is carried in both physicality and voice. It is placed in a timeless space of existence, which explores the primary themes of being, chaos and beauty, blood and birth, love and war in the same frame.”

The performer’s expression of his spiritual “source” gives the audience the baton to walk through their own paradigm of ontology, the poetry , prose and physical storytelling furnish us with the necessary tools into a deep meditation. It undoubtedly begs the questions (or theory) of being, becoming and unbecoming.

A winner of the Standard Bank Ovation Award, Cape Town Fringe Fresh Performer Award and Cape Town Fringe Fresh Creative Award for Directing, Tswalo can be seen in the Playhouse Loft Theatre between May 8 and 12, 2019.

Schools performances of the acclaimed production, which plays for 55 minutes without an interval, will be held from Wednesday to Friday, May 8 to 10, at 10h00 (R30 tickets per learner booked through or call 031 369 9407).

Public performances are on May 9 and 10 at 19h00, and May 11 at 14h00 and 19h00. Book through Computicket telephonically on 0861 915 8000, online at, or call Playhouse Box Office 031 369 9540 / 369 9596 (office hours).
