DUO APPASSIONATO

Friends of Music will present a programme by Duo Appassionato of solo and duo virtuoso works on May 14, 2019.

The Duo Appassionato was formed by Violeta Osorhean and Andrew Warburton in October 2017, with the express purpose of exploring and performing the great duo repertoire for violin and piano.

The programme will includes works by Johan Sebastian Bach, Franz Schubert, Ludwig van Beethoven and Camille Saint-Saens.

Violeta Osorhean was born in Romania and started playing the violin at the age of six. She studied violin at the Romanian Music Academy. After graduating in 1994 she joined the National Romanian Opera Orchestra and toured widely with them. She then moved to the Transylvania Philharmonic Orchestra where in 2000 she had a tour consisting of 22 concerts in Europe with the famous rock band Deep Purple. In 2005, she relocated to Durban, South Africa, to take up a position with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra. Since September 2017, she has been the Concert Master for the Orchestra.

Andrew Warburton is acknowledged as one of the finest solo pianists and accompanists in South Africa. He has performed concertos with all the country's orchestras  and has partnered many eminent soloists, from  South Africa and abroad, in recital. He served as Musical Director/Repetiteur/Chorus Master for over 100 productions of opera, musicals and ballet presented by the Playhouse Company in Durban and the State Theatre in Pretoria. He is currently Lecturer in Piano and the Director of the Opera School and Choral Academy, and head of Western Classical Performance Studies at the UKZN School of Music. He graduated with a PhD in piano performance in April this year.

The Prelude Performers for the evening will be Sonali Naidoo (violin) and Nilashri Naidoo (flute).

Sonali (13) and Nilashri (11) are sisters with a love for music that began at a young age. Both are pupils at Durban Girls’ College. Nilashri studies violin with Violeta Osorhean and Sonali studies flute with Lisa Thom. They are both piano students of Julie Macilwaine. Both girls are members of their school orchestra, choir and Marimba band.

They will perform Gavotte by François Joseph Gossec for flute and violin; Menuett by Luigi Boccherini  for flute and violin and The Entertainer by Scott Joplin for violin and piano.

The concert will take place at 19h30 on May 14, 2019, at the Durban Jewish Centre, 44 KE Masinga (Old Fort) Road, Durban. Tickets R120 (R100 FOM members) available at the door.
