Zakifo Music Festival, in conjunction with
Concerts SA, brings the island sounds of Reunion-based outfit, Lindigo, and
South Africa’s Ilima band together for your listening pleasure at The Rainbow
Restaurant on May 26, 2019.
Established in 1999, Lindigo amazes with
its explosive and stunning scenic representations. Combining the Maloya’s
instrumental tradition with Madagascarian polyphonies, the band disrupts the
rules of this kind of music. The music style of Maloya is Reunion Island’s
vibrant symbol of creole culture whose strident vocal calls, chanted responses
and complex percussion rhythms originated with the slaves brought to work on
the sugar plantations and became a weapon of resistance, banned until the
1980s.
Ilima has been in existence for over 20
years under the leadership of multi-instrumentalist, Victor Sithole. Combining
Western and African indigenous instruments, Ilima sets out to celebrate indigenous
music and culture with a crossover into jazz, in a self-described style of
IndiJazz.
Lindigo participation is made possible
through the support of Zakifo, and Ilima's participation in this event is made
possible through the support of Concerts SA.
The concert takes place on May 26 at the Rainbow
Restaurant, 23 Stanfield Lane, Pinetown. Doors open at 13h00. Tickets R80 at
the door, Pick ‘n Pay or www.webtickets.co.za
