(“Postcards for my
Mother”, mixed media by Jaap Jacobs)
The exhibition currently running in the Schreiner Gallery of the Tatham
Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg consists of art works recently produced by Jaap
Jacobs, some in fulfilment of his present Honours course in Fine Art at the
Centre for Visual Art, University of KwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg.
The artist is interested in the biographies of objects and their power
as conveyors of personal history. He experiments with a variety of unusual
materials and methods. At the same time, he challenges the relevance of
traditional methods of conservation in museum practice.
Tatham Art Gallery Education Programmes around this exhibition include
discussions and workshops.
June 9 (10h00 to 10h50): Walkabout by Jaap of his exhibition in the
Schreiner Gallery (before the opening of the Standard Bank Exhibition)
June 28 (14h00 to 15h00): Free discussion with Jaap about Creative Art
Making
July 2 to 4 (09h30 to 12h30) Three day Workshop on Creative Art Making.
Jaap Jacobs will be leading a workshop in which he wants students to
experience process-led art. It could take the form of dipping paper into ink,
rubbing on paper, or pressing crumpled paper into ink and then printing it onto
paper. The images on the paper will then be used to lead the students into
drawing or painting into it.
Creations will also be rotated so that more than one student will work
on a piece. This is to prevent the notion that what we create must be ‘pretty’
and ‘precious.’ These creations must be process driven.
Students need to bring the following
-Trays (for dipping paper into a mixture of ink and or paint)
-Paper (A3 or A2) or bigger if
possible
-Hair drier for drying paper
-Black ballpoint pens
-Any other art materials that are available – pigments, paint etc
Jaap will provide:
-An old towel for drying paper,
-Black ink and black paint
-Masking tape
-Hot glue gun
-Rubber masking fluid
Cost of the workshop: R450. Booking is essential through kobie.venter@msunduzi.gov.za
or 033 3922 819.
Jaap Jacob’s exhibition runs until July 14, 2019, at 17h00 in the Tatham’s

Chief Albert Luthuli Street, Pietermaritzburg. It is open from Tuesdays to
