Deadline
for applications: Monday, June 24, 2019
The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) and the
Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Rights Organisation (DALRO) invite playwrights
to apply to attend a theatre making professional development workshop which
forms part of ACT’s Creative (un)Conference.
The rigorous programme includes practical
guidance on the costs of staging a play presented by award-winning playwright,
Mike van Graan. He will unpack the challenges that independent theatre-makers
face when getting their work on a stage and producing a touring production.
Participants will also attend refresher
courses in business and administrative practice and discuss how to raise one’s
profile and update one’s professional practice to attract funding and creative
opportunities.
Award-winning novelist and playwright,
Craig Higginson, will also run a playwrighting workshop. Participants will have
sent in a scene from a play they are working on, along with a short synopsis of
the play as a whole, prior to the workshop. Craig will give them feedback on
their work during the session while also discussing a range of things to
consider when developing a play – from initial conception to final production.
Participants are encouraged to come to the session with questions they would
like to discuss.
The day will conclude with an experimental,
interdisciplinary expression of serious play in a process-driven exercise
presented to no audience.
The workshop is limited to 15 participants
and will take place on Saturday, July 20, 2019, in Maboneng, Johannesburg.
Applicants must submit one original writing extract for consideration.
Email one scene and a brief synopsis of the
play to anastasia@act.org.za for an undisclosed panel to review. NB: Only successful applicants will be contacted with further information.
Deadline: Monday, June 24, 2019
