The internationally-acclaimed production, King Cetshwayo - the Musical, will
embark on tour kicking off in Wales followed by a Playhouse run in Durban from July
30 to August 4, 2019, then closing the tour at the State Theatre in Pretoria in
September 2019.
Presented by the Wushwini Pan African
Centre for Arts, Culture and Heritage in association with The Playhouse
Company, Ethekwini Municipality-Arts and Living Cultures and KwaZulu-Natal
Department of Arts and Culture. King Cetshwayo
- the Musical, retells the epic story of the Zulu nation against the mighty
British troops in 1879 at the Battle of Isandlwana.
The internationally acclaimed production, King Cetshwayo, which premiered in Wales
in 2017, had a successful run in 2018 at The Playhouse featuring, among others,
Nhlakanipho Maphumulo (Uzalo) as Mnyamana. The musical is the brainchild of
playwright, Jerry Pooe who wrote and directed it with Mbuso Khoza and Sandile
Mpungose as musical directors.
The year 2019 is the year to celebrate 25
years of democracy, it is also a year of celebrating 140 years of the Zulu
victory at the battle of Isandlwana
Pooe says: “School children will see
Africans portrayed in a positive light as evidenced by the epic victory of King
Cetshwayo’s regiments against Queen Victoria’s well-armed troops. It is
important for them to know and understand the history of South Africans as
narrated by South Africans themselves.”
King Cetshwayo
- the Musical, is the story of life and times of King
Cetshwayo highlighting the events that led to the war, Isandlwana victory,
banishment of the king, the visit of King Cetshwayo to the Queen of London and
the celebration of the Zulus defeating the great mighty English soldiers.
A Welsh newspaper said “Beautiful in its
dance scenes, fearsome in its warring, acute narration, comic in its mimicry of
the gun-carrying redcoats. The skin-prickling returning price of the warriors
in the audience. The poet, the costumes, the toe-tapping music, the beat and
the heat, the show it’s a must see.”
King Cetshwayo
- the Musical runs from July 30 to August 4, 2019,
in the Playhouse. Tickets R50 (R30 for learners) and are available at The Playhouse.
Shows for schools are from 09h00 to 11h30 and at 19h00 for the public.
