The Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg has an ongoing educational
outreach project that offers disadvantage youth with no art background a chance
to develop the continuity of creative process within artistic skills.
“This year our class has been making all sorts of things from stamps and
postcard to card making. Inspirational external exhibitions has drilled the
learner’s potential, helps these emerging artists to enhance and extend
knowledge of art theory and mostly practical,” says art class teacher, Pinky
Nkabinde, who is also the Education Officer at the Tatham Art Gallery.
They can be seen in the new rank doing what they do best to celebrate
the beauty of the City of Choice as they have been working on a mural painting
for the past two weeks at the New Freedom Square Taxi Rank opposite Natalia
building. The theme for the taxi rank was Freedom.
“This is part of our outreach programme, Tatham Art Gallery in
conjunction with the Building section of Msunduzi Municipality together
organised a painting mural which describes the City of Choice at its best. Part
of leaners from the Art Classes for Young Adults take part in this project as a
form of the gallery’s development programmes,” Nkabinde adds.
“The space and walls in the new rank will change to be a busy place
where people will be taking their selfies in the background of this colourful
and beautiful mural. Recently we had campaigns of cleaning the city, now it is
time to beautify the city with permanent display in the walls!”
