Johannesburg actress Michelle Douglas will
be back at the Hilton Arts Festival, returning to the festival as one of the
grieving Aberfan Mums in the astonishing drama, The Revlon Girl.
Photographer Harry Lock captured Douglas at
last year’s festival after her performance in Mike van Graan’s tense political
thriller, Green Man Flashing, as part
of his Out of Character photo essay.
Aberfan, the mistake that cost a village
its children. The Revlon Girl – which
won a Standard Bank Ovation Silver Award at last year’s National Arts Festival
– tells the poignant and tender story of a group of women who try and make
sense of their lives after losing their children in the October 1966 mining
disaster.
A catastrophe which was completely
avoidable; 116 children and 28 adults were lost when an avalanche of coal-slurry
engulfed their junior school when a colliery spoil tip collapsed in South Wales
on half-term break-up day.
This beautifully crafted, delicate story
about friendship; loss; family; community; healing and hope is told with
sensitivity and charm. Neil Anthony Docking’s intelligent and sensitive script
unpacks the enormity of grief. It looks at a bereavement support group of
mothers who meet weekly looking for diversion and redemption. Despite its
devastating subject matter, it is a life-affirming shout-out to the strength of
sisterhood – and is surprisingly funny.

Revlon Girl is one of the productions selected to
