THE MUSIC IMBIZO

Over 120 speakers from over 30 countries will be in Durban attending The Music Imbizo 2019, from August 28 to 31 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The Music Imbizo is an international music business conference and exhibition that is held in Durban (South Africa) during the last week of August. The conference collects various music industry stakeholders under one roof to map new and exciting ways forward for music industry in the continent. It is a platform to exhibit, network, share expertise and knowledge.

The Music Imbizo is a continuously growing platform, and its growth is directly proportional to the understanding of the music business environment in the African continent. In its 11th year, and having hosted some distinguished names in the global music business like Seymour Stein (Vice President of Warner Bros, USA), Aibee Abidoye (GM: Chocolate City, Nigeria), Dr. Sipho Sithole (Co-Founder: Native Rhythms), Mr. Keith Harris OBE (Manager: Stevie Wonder, UK) and many others … The Music Imbizo is still pushing the boundaries and expanding the knowledge base in the continent.

2019 is special, as the conference has partnered with EVERYONE.

It is clear that collaborations and partnerships are important to the growth of the conference. eThekwini Municipality (Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture) has featured consistently over the past few years. The national department of Arts and Culture is back for the second year. BET and MTVBase join an impressive list of media partners that cover digital, radio and print, which include Gagasi FM, Slikour On Life (https://www.slikouronlife.co.za Isolezwe, The Mercury, Music in Africa (https://www.musicinafrica.net and Move Hiphop (http://www.movehiphop.co.za

Music industry organisations joined in as well, with SAMRO (https://www.samro.org.za) IMPRA (https://www.impra.co.za), CAPASSO (https://www.capasso.co.za/) scheduled to host workshops, one-on-one sessions, exhibit and make their presence felt at The Music Imbizo 2019.

A collaboration with the Botswana International Music Conference will see a Botswana Deejay Night hosted during The Music Imbizo plus four Botswana deejays will do a mini club tour in Durban. Moshito and The Music Imbizo also sign an agreement in 2019 that would make sure that both conferences share content in the near future.

The National Community Radio Forum (KwaZulu-Natal) will be represented by 10 community radio stations from across the province at The Music Imbizo 2019. This is an interesting and necessary partnership. The Music Imbizo also partnered with transport and accommodation outlets, a special partnership is that of the conference with Intercape, the bus company. Intercape will be giving 10% to The Music Imbizo 2019 ticket holders travelling to Durban to attend The Music Imbizo. This partnership includes all existing South African routes of Intercape to Durban, plus their routes in Namibia, Botswana, Malawi and Mozambique.

The Music Gear Expo has been revived with a collaboration with COPA (http://www.copasa.co.za), Musician Gear Zone (http://www.tradelius.co.za), Glenwood Village Music (https://bothners.co.za/glenwood-village-music-durban), Marshall Music (https://www.marshallmusic.co.za/) and TOMS (https://www.toms.co.za)

A collaboration with KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission will see the music and the film industry in one space, networking and creating opportunities for both industries.

The Music Imbizo 2019 partnership and collaboration list includes Sheer Publishing, Durban Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Boston Media House, Onomo Hotel, Content Connect Africa, Durban Global Shapers plus many others.

The Music Imbizo’s vision is simple – contributing to the creation of a highly organized, sustainable and successful music industry within the continent, where practitioners are knowledgeable with a world view of the ins and outs of the music business.

The organisers say: “And we believe that with our partners on board, we can go far – beyond our own imagination”.
