(Williams
Saints Choir members: Lucy Robbins, Caroline Petzer, Maude Goetsch & Gina
Holloway Mulder)
Rhumbelow Theatre at Tina’s Hotel in Kloof
will host The Williams Saints Ladies Choir and the Stormy Monday band on August
24 and 25, 2019.
The Williams Saints Ladies’ Choir, based in
the Upper Highway area, is a versatile, entertaining and feisty group of 20
singers who cover both the classical and light music genre. Originally founded
in 1982, Bessie Williams gathered a group of music enthusiasts together and for
many years she hosted the rehearsals while accompanying the choir on the piano.
In 2005, soprano soloist Pat Haley gradually succeeded Williams as conductor of
the choir and with her accompanist, Helen Nel, successfully trained the choir
for more than a decade. In 2017, retired St Mary’s Music department colleagues
Ronél Perks and accompanist Priscilla Crundwell, took over the reins and
invited past St Mary’s DSG singers to join the choir, hence the amalgamated
name, the Williams Saints Choir.
“Our choir has expanded to include singers
from across the greater Durban area,” explained conductor Ronél Perks: “Our
repertoire is wide and includes favourite classics such as Pachelbel’s Canon in
D, Bach in Swingle Singers’ style, Mozart’s haunting Lacrimosa from his Requiem
and the beautiful Flower Duet from the opera Lakmé performed by St Mary’s Old Girls Liza Hastie and Sarah
Walker. In a lighter vein we also sing the Carpenter’s Top of the World, Laurika Rauch’s Blouberg se Strand, laid-back Jazz Standards and as a finale, a
Medley of Music from the Sixties with a dramatic introduction by Highway-based
Voice Movement Therapist Gina Holloway-Mulder."
The connection between this dynamic choir
and the band is Sylvia Tempest who, as a member of both groups, inspires
audiences with her love for music and her spirited performances. Stormy Monday
members met in 2013 at the Westville Theatre Club and spontaneously decided to
form a band. They perform pop and rock covers with Tempest on vocals and keys,
Hylton Blignault on vocals and guitar, Adrian Haycock on bass and Richard
Tempest on drums. Their repertoire includes music by Fleetwood Mac, The
Beatles, Pat Benatar, T-Rex, The Cars, David Bowie, Suzi Quatro, The Doors,
Joan Armatrading. Past gigs include Monteseel Music Festival, Music in the
Shed, Emoyeni Country Lodge and Music in the Hills.
Performances take place on August 24 at
20h00 and August 25 at 14h00. (The theatre venue opens 60 minutes before show
