(David
Viviers & Jemma Kahn)
Cellist
with Rabies is an extraordinary piece of writing
and performance as well as being the most unusual love story ever. It is this
year’s Flagship Production of the Hilton Arts Festival with performances at
10h00 on September 14 and 15, 2019.
Only one person is known to have survived
full-blown rabies, by undergoing a radical form of treatment called The
Milwaukee Protocol. In this romantic tragedy loosely based in the sciences,
virologist Joan Remy is extremely sceptical of the Milwaukee Protocol. She is
also in love with rabies.
Jemma Kahn dreamed up the story of Cellist with Rabies, wrote it and
performs in it with David Viviers. It is sensitively and daringly directed by
Jaco Bouwer.
Bouwer and Kahn are both winners of the prestigious
Standard Bank Young Artist for Theatre Award. They are collaborating here for
the first time and have created a piece of post-modern theatre that can be
described as erotic, intelligent and utterly engaging.
It is not easy to describe… is it a love
story? Yes! … is it set in a medical research laboratory ….Yes! Is there a
character which is also a rabies virus …Yes! … is it played by a dishy guy
….Yes!
Cellist
with Rabies premiered to sold-out houses at this
year’s National Arts Festival in Makhanda (Grahamstown).
