(Martin
Clunes & Buddy)
Martin Clunes returns to play the nation’s
favourite grumpy medic in a brand new series of Doc Martin for ITV Choice (Channel 123) starting on September 30 at
20h00.
In this hugely popular show, Clunes stars
as Dr Martin Ellingham, a GP with a brusque bedside manner and a phobia of
blood, while Caroline Catz plays the his wife, Louisa Ellingham, who has since
resigned from her job as headmistress at the local school to pursue a new
career in child counselling.
Also returning for this ninth series is
Dame Eileen Atkins, who plays Doc Martin’s formidable Aunt Ruth; Ian McNeice
who plays Bert Large, with Joe Absolom as his son Al; John Marquez as PC Joe
Penhale; Jessica Ransom as the doctor’s
receptionist Morwenna Newcross and Selina Cadell as pharmacist Mrs
Tishell.
The regular cast are joined in this series
by special guest stars Danny Huston, who plays a man shot by a farmer who
thinks he is stealing eggs; Conleth Hill (who some might recognise as Lord
Varys in Game of Thrones), a GP who
comes to assess the Doc; Caroline Quentin as vet Angela Sim and Tom Conti who
plays an eminent surgeon who is also assessing the Doc.
Says Clunes of his character: “When we left
the Doc at the end of the last series he was under investigation by the General
Medical Council. Now he is in deep water having to pass an assessment to see if
he is competent if he wants to carry on practising as a GP."
Also in the new series - without giving too
much away - the Doc has to go on a phlebotomy course to try and cure his blood
phobia; the Doc and Louisa discuss whether the time is right to try for a baby
brother or sister for their three year-old son James and Buddy the dog goes
missing, and it turns out he has fallen in love with Shelly - the dog owned by
Julia, the local undertaker.
Fun and games and a bit of drama - just as
the millions of Doc Martin fans like
it!
