(2018
Standard Group Winner 3rd place Iphupho Lami)
This year’s 2019 edition of The Playhouse
Company’s National Isicathamiya Competition takes place through the night on September
21 starting at 18h00 in The Playhouse Opera. Hosts for the 2019 competition will
be Vicky Masuku and Zimiphi Biyela.
The competition attracts the participation
of some 90 dedicated Isicathamiya groups who converge from throughout the
entire eastern Seaboard of South Africa, stretching from Transkei, and across
the whole of KwaZulu-Natal, even embracing groups from Gauteng, to compete for
prize money totalling R200,000 in the following categories: Top 20, Standard,
and Open Section.
This celebration of the traditional music
genre, made famous by Grammy award-winners, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, has long
occupied a pride of place on KZN’s arts calendar, attracting great numbers of
the groups as well as members of the public who thrill to the spectacle and
discipline of this endearing art form.
A fashion extravaganza is another element
to the competition for some 55 males and females, during interludes
interspersed during the competition. The ladies competing in the category known
as Onobuhle (Beauty Queens) while the male fashionistas show their paces in the
category known as Oswenka (Swanking). This fun event invariably generates much
enjoyment from the audience who delight in the glamorous side of Isicathamiya
culture.
Isicathamiya Competition has become a major
red-letter event on the South African’s culture calendar. The Playhouse
continues to promote and preserve indigenous arts forms and profiling artistic
contributions from all corners of South Africa.
