The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music will
presents Sanele Phakathi on September 11, 2019.
Umlazi-born Phakathi is a talented
contemporary jazz singer and pianist. He is widely known for being pianist for some of South Africa’s well-known and
celebrated musicians such as Mbuso Mbusuyeza Khoza, Xolisa Roro Gqoli-Dlamini,
Nhlanhla Mahlangu and Philani Ngidi to name a few.
He started music formally in Comtech high
school where he learnt theory, practice, and music appreciation from his music
teacher Xolani Hlongwa. His personal sound is influenced by the sound of
yesteryear soul and jazz legends such as George Benson, Al Jarreau and Bheki
Mseleku, Keith Jarret and Oscar Peterson.
To Phakathi, music is a way of life as it
has got him through hardships and he has learnt to channel those through
composing music. Every composition he writes gives him hope that there’s more
to look forward to in life than the current situation.
Phakathi and his band have performed at a
variety of venues in and around Durban. He is also currently working on his
project called The New Anthem which
he hopes to record in the near future. The audience can expect nothing but the
best experience, a great vibe.
Phakathi will be joined by his band, bass guitarist
Dalisu Ndlazi, drummer Sbu Zondi, alto
saxophonist Leon Scharnick, young trumpeter Thabo Sikhakhane, Siyalo Zulu on trombone , Nomcebo Luthuli
and Zoe Masuku on vocals, and special
guest Mpumi Dhlamini on alto saxophone.
The concert takes place at The Centre for
Jazz and Popular music (CJPM), Level 2, Shepstone Building at UKZN Howard
College Campus on September 11, 2019, at 18h00 (doors open at 17h30). General
