Boy Mokhatla)
The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music will
present the Jazz Drum showcase by selected UKZN Jazz Drum students and who are
prominent faces on the Durban and South African music scene on October 16, 2019.
The participants include Tembisa-born
Kabelo Boy Mokhatla who has performed with the likes of Adam Glaser, Mabi
Thobejane, Mandla Mlangeni, Sibusiso Mash Mashiloane and has jammed with the
likes of Christian McBride and Lee Oskar. He has performed in various festivals.
Mokhatla first studied at the Moses Taiwa
Molelekwa Arts Foundation before UKZN. He is the 2019 Standard Bank Youth Band
drummer and has recently performed at Standard Bank Joy of Jazz.
He will present two tunes, one by professor
Salim Washington titled Oshun and an
original piece. He will be joined by Thabo Sikhakhane (trumpet), Salim
Washington (saxophone), Nokwanda Nkala (tenor saxophone), Andile Mosia (voice),
Sibusiso Shabalala (piano), Giyane Shangase (upright bass), and Samkelo Chamane
(guitar).
Other participants include Phila Makhubo,
Athenkosi Gcingca and Skhulile Sibisi who will present a well-loved Jazz
standard called What Is This Thing Called
Love? and a drum and bass improvisation.
This concert is the last Trios gig for the
year, and the last of a series of instrumental showcases that took place over
the course of the year. All proceeds go to the Ronnie Madonsela Scholarship.
The Jazz Drum Showcase takes place at The
Centre for Jazz and Popular music (CJPM), Level 2, Shepstone Building at UKZN
Howard College Campus on October 16 at 18h00 (doors open at 17h30) General
admission R80 (R50 pensioners, R25 students).
