The organisers explain: “African Unity – The Real Currency … the
cliché, United We Stand, Divided We Fall remains as true today as it was when
John Dickinson used the words to unite Americans pre-revolution. As a people,
our strength is always in our unity. For Africa, unity has been elusive, with
xenophobic attacks across the region plus tribal wars. An African identity has
been difficult to carve out of our recent history of colonialism and
oppression.
“But Africa perseveres, rich in culture
that is consistently influencing the global music industry, the African sounds
(new and old) are fast becoming global trends. African musicians are touring
and collaborating. Their music knows no borders and is making its way to all
corners of the continent and finding space in the USA, Europe and the East. Now
more than before, the music industry in the continent finds itself in a
favourable position to take ownership and direct the ship. How is it going to
be done? Are we ready to take charge? How are we going to take charge and push
forward a “golden age” of African music business?”
The Music Imbizo 2020 is a catalyst for
serious conversations around ownership and the best practises in building a
music industry hub in the continent. The Music Imbizo’s vision is simple –
contribute to the creation of a highly organized, sustainable and successful
music industry in the continent, where practitioners are knowledgeable and have
a world view of the ins and outs of the music business.
This theme will run throughout the four
days of The Music Imbizo and will influence all discussions. Submissions are
open and input from those interested is welcome.
