Taking place at the eNdishini Sports
Grounds, opposite Sukuma High School in Pietermaritzburg, Kwasuka Sukela: Roots
of iMbali 2019 with the theme, Conquering
Spirits, takes place on December 13 and 14 and offers a festivity
celebrating storytelling, literacy, poetry, music and art.
A melting pot of artistry, paints a
different image of iMbali than people have become accustomed to. A legendary
affair with renowned storyteller Dr Gcina Mhlophe presented stories during the
pre-event on December 13, during the Msunduzi Library Programme. This will
serve as the closing of Msunduzi Library Services holiday programme with
storyteller, face-painting, jumping castles, mobile library, poetry, music and
dance performances form young talent, including local band Young Band. Entrance
is free and everyone is welcome.
Saturday December 14 sees another icon
entering the spotlight, beloved mkhulu from Sobantu, PMB, legendary guitarist Themba
Mokoena who has travelled the world over and plays with the likes of Simphiwe Dana,
Sibongile Khumalo, Abigail Khubeka, amongst others.
He will share the stage with local artists
including Pretty & The Music, Undivided Roots, King James, 2DAXA, Fluwid,
Selekta, District XIII and many more. With exhibitions by Dawn Morey, Junkie,
Lunga Bhengu, Muzi Ndlela, Sir Lincoln and Pretty Olifant. MCs Ndu Zondi and BB
Stylez will also give performance as artists in their own right.
Tickets R80 for adults, R40 for children
and R20 for under sevens. There will also be fashion, crafts, food and
refreshment stalls. Camps chairs, picnic baskets and cooler boxes welcome. Gates
open at 10h00 until late.

Yet another opportunity to deliver tales
through varied art forms and continue using art as a weapon in uplifting local
talent, fighting social injustices and empowering the community. The fifth
offering in the telling pages and intriguing chapters of Kwasuka Sukela which
means: Once-Upon-A-Time. Through art, they uncover history, celebrate heroes
and heroines (old and new). This family picnic event aims tell the seldom told stories
of iMbali and her people.
The organisers state: “Our tales are
similar across townships and so are our struggles. Ours is to create intergenerational
spaces to showcase, mould, harness and celebrate local talent. To inspire,
motivate and contribute to the development of our communities. Kwasuka Sukela:
Roots of iMbali traces the umbilical cord of our buzzing township. “
