The Hilton College Music Department proudly
presents Class Act, a benefit concert
featuring old-boy and internationally celebrated counter-tenor Nathan Julius,
and jazz saxophone sensation and music teacher at Hilton, Simone van Niekerk,
on Tuesday February 11, at 19h00, in the Hilton College Theatre.
Class
Act is a celebration of classical singing and
instrumental jazz and is the perfect way to treat your loved one this
Valentine’s week! Fans of lyrical vocal classics and jazz aficionados will
revel in the repertoire for the evening, as both genres combine in a glorious
homage to eclectic musical stylings.
Currently in his final year at Schola
Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland, Julius is a Renaissance and Baroque
vocal specialist, and has earned a reputation as an excellent counter-tenor; a
unique voice group that allows him to sing in a register much higher than a
usual operatic tenor. He will be performing light vocal works by Handel,
Monteverdi and Tosti, accompanied by Jaco Dippenaar on piano.
Joining Julius on the bill is the
accomplished young saxophonist, Simone van Niekerk, and her group of jazz musos
that have been burning up the live music circuit in Pietermaritzburg and the
Midlands. Performing well-love jazz standards, including That’s the Way Love Goes by Kirk Whalum and Spain by Chick Corea, as well as some excellent African jazz
standards made famous by the late Hugh Masekela, van Niekerk brings a hint of
sultry passion to the evening’s performance.
This is an opportunity not to be missed.
All donations and proceeds from the evening will be used to assist Julius in
funding his Master’s tuition in Switzerland.
Class Act takes place in the Hilton College
Theatre at 19h00 on February 11. Entrance is free but donations are encouraged.
Seating is unreserved (regret no children under the age of 3-years old
